Episode Summary

Meeting Richard at Gimpy Muster

Jon meets Richard at the Gimpy Muster. Richard visits yearly for five years. The group grows bigger each time. He’s vision impaired – sees shadows only. From a boating accident 15 years ago off Western Port Bay.

The Horrific Boating Accident

The tinny capsized. His mate swam in; Richard couldn’t. He clung seven hours in freezing water. Hypothermia hit. He let go, swam three strokes, grabbed the motor. Woke in hospital blind. Recognised pigmentosa sped up by stress.

How Blind People Live: Independence Lost & Found

Everything changed. Gave up car, business. Depression set in. Wife pushed for a guide dog. First, cane training. Embarrassed, he trained in other suburbs. Got certified – then became a triathlete. Swam 2-3km daily after six months coaching. Did four Noosa tris, two Mooloolaba as the “Three Blind Mice.”

Embracing Adventure & Helping Others

Exercise beat depression. Fishing addiction: barra over a metre, catch-release. Guide dog navigates Gimpy Muster at 2am. Helps disabilities: rock climbing, Mount Coolum, motorbikes, jet boating, fly fishing. Organised car racing, plane jumps for blind – life-changing thrills.

How Blind People Live: Fishing & Freedom

Fishing thrill: cast at “1 o’clock,” wind slow, feel the barra fight. Hear eagles, ducks fly over. Captained boats, taught others. Accept disability – become free. Talks at clubs: show how blind people live beyond limits.

No Time for Regrets, Just Joy

Busier now than ever. Wife tows caravan, off-road adventures. Loves live music, guitars. How blind people live? Good support, routines, letting go. Inspires Parkinson’s mate to catch 1-metre barra – changes lives.
